Requirements NIST SOURCE

Notify the user, upon successful logon, of the number of [one of: successful logons; unsuccessful logon attempts; both] during [time period].

Discussion (NIST Supplemental Guidance)

Information about the number of successful and unsuccessful logon attempts within a specified time period allows the user to recognize if the number and type of logon attempts are consistent with the user’s actual logon attempts.

Engineering Interpretation

Original engineering commentary written for this explorer — not NIST source text and not authoritative guidance.

No engineering interpretation has been authored for AC-9(2) yet. This section is architected to receive it — see the Requirements and Assessment sections above for the authoritative NIST source content in the meantime.

Assessment

NIST SP 800-53A REV 5.2.0

Assessment Objectives

  1. one of the following PARAMETER VALUES is selected: {successful logons; unsuccessful logon attempts; both};
  2. the time period for which the system notifies the user of the number of successful logons, unsuccessful logon attempts, or both is defined;
  3. the user is notified, upon successful logon, of the number of <AC-09(02)_ODP[01] SELECTED PARAMETER VALUE> during <AC-09(02)_ODP[02] time period>.

Examine

[SELECT FROM: Access control policy; procedures addressing previous logon notification; system design documentation; system configuration settings and associated documentation; system audit records; system security plan; other relevant documents or records].

Interview

[SELECT FROM: System/network administrators; organizational personnel with information security responsibilities; system developers].

Test

[SELECT FROM: Mechanisms implementing access control policy for previous logon notification].

STIGs & CCIs

No STIG checks or CCI mappings are currently loaded for AC-9(2). This section is architected to display, per product: STIG ID, Finding ID, Severity, Title, Description, Check, Fix, CCI, and NIST control mapping — but nothing is populated here until a real DISA STIG/CCI dataset is ingested.
